Where McHenry Arrest News Appears
No single feed gathers every McHenry County arrest. Start where the record was made. Sheriff media releases and the State's Attorney put out official word, though both pick and choose what to announce. Local papers fill in the detail. They usually name the agency or courthouse a story came from. Private county pages sometimes copy public fields and booking photos. Their timing and corrections have nothing to do with the official record. Woodstock, Crystal Lake, Algonquin, and McHenry itself can all land in one countywide stream of stories. Coverage follows events, not a schedule. A Crystal Lake arrest story might trace back to city police, the county jail, or a court filing. Where the story runs never tells you who is actually in custody.
McHenry County News Outlets
The table separates official publication from local reporting and private arrest-history pages. “Photos” means a photo may appear in an article or third-party interface. It does not mean the outlet provides a complete or current booking-photo roster.
| Outlet | Coverage and cadence | Photos? | Where to start |
|---|---|---|---|
| McHenry County Sheriff | Official media releases and historical weekly arrest bulletins. Cadence varies. | Selected releases may contain images; the bulletin checked showed no gallery. | Official media-release hub |
| McHenry County State’s Attorney | Official selected charging, detention, sentencing, and community announcements. | Varies by release. | Official press-release page |
| Shaw Local / Northwest Herald | Recurring Police Reports archive and weekly county felony reports. | Article photos may appear; the archive is not a photo roster. | Police Reports archive |
| Lake and McHenry County Scanner | Frequent, event-driven local crime and court reporting. | Story images may appear. | McHenry County News category |
| McHenry County Blog | Daily or near-daily local posts, often based on agency or State’s Attorney material. | Some stories may use an associated image. | County Blog |
| Patch | City-local blotter examples for Crystal Lake and Algonquin; cadence varies. | Article-dependent. | Crystal Lake example |
| Busted Newspaper | Unofficial rolling county section with copied booking-style fields. | Its interface may show photos. It is not an official custody source. | McHenry section, secondary only |
| RecentlyBooked | Unofficial recent-booking section with a stated recent window and search tools. | Photo cards may appear; freshness is not guaranteed. | McHenry section, secondary only |
| Mugshots.com and Arrests.org | Unofficial county or city paths with variable date and result states. | Display varies. Neither is a Sheriff roster. | Named as research leads, not official sources |
| Mugshots.zone and RecordsPage | Indexed or private county guides with different access and verification limits. | Unverified or variable. | Unverified research references |
Daily Herald did not yield a stable McHenry mugshot section in the audit. That absence does not rule out a future story. It means a stable section and cadence were not verified for this build. For aggregate statewide context, the Illinois Arrest Explorer is a statistics tool, not an individual booking lookup.
Official McHenry Releases First
The Sheriff’s media-release hub is the official starting point for selected agency news. The archived July bulletin shows the historical multi-day pattern. An observed weekly bulletin listed subject name, age, resident city, arrest date and time, and charge(s) for a stated week. It did not display a visible booking-photo gallery. The publication may remain available after a person leaves the current inmate report.
The county news category and State’s Attorney press releases add official detention, prosecution, sentence, or community information. Read the custody state in the release itself. “Arrested,” “detained,” “charged,” and “sentenced” are different points in the record path.
The local news archive screenshot below shows the format of Shaw Local’s recurring Police Reports page. A sample weekly felony report shows why story dates and source attribution matter.
Open the Shaw Local Police Reports archive before reading the image.
The archive is a news index, not a jail database. A selected report can be checked against the Sheriff, city police, or Circuit Clerk.
How Booking Photos Reach McHenry News
News photos can come from an agency release, a press request, a court or event photograph, or a publisher’s own reporting. Illinois’ 5 ILCS 140/2.15 identifies a photograph when and if available among arrest-information fields and regulates certain law-enforcement social-network publication. It does not require the McHenry Sheriff to turn the current text PDF into a photo gallery.
The separate 20 ILCS 160/4a news-media provision helps explain how arrest information can be made available to news outlets. A news request, a city FOIA request, and a private publisher’s copy are still different routes. The official source controls the record and the legal custody status.
Photo caution: a story image can be old, associated with a different event, or absent even when the article names a charge. Verify the person, date, agency, and case before repeating it.
The screenshot below documents a local news landing page rather than a person’s booking photo. The Scanner’s county category is the more focused route.
Open the Lake and McHenry County Scanner’s McHenry category for current article context.
The Scanner reports events frequently, but its category is not a complete booking list and does not establish current custody.
Unofficial County Sections, With Caution
Third-party pages are useful only as a lead to verify. Busted Newspaper describes a county-local rolling list and publishes a free correction form. RecentlyBooked describes a recent window and a no-fee update policy for qualifying records. Mugshots.com describes free record maintenance for qualifying court documents. Arrests.org’s McHenry path had date navigation but no stable current result set in the audit. Mugshots.zone was indexed but could not be reached, so its source and policy remain unverified.
RecordsPage is a private guide, not a government service. Its claim that the official roster includes mugshots conflicted with the inspected Sheriff PDFs, which showed text fields and no photo. That disagreement is a reason to return to the Sheriff, city records, or court, not a reason to treat a private page as an authority.
Photos shown by these services are not hosted here. A copied card can preserve an old charge, use the wrong identity, or remain after an official change. The underlying status belongs to the Sheriff, arresting agency, court, IDOC, or federal locator that created it.
From a Story to the McHenry Record
A news story hands you a few solid facts. Name, date, agency, and the reported charge. That is a starting point for a McHenry County record search. It is not the whole file, though. Treat the article as a lead, then chase down the actual documents before you assume the person is still behind bars.
- Save the story date, the person’s name, the arresting agency, and the charge wording.
- Check the Sheriff current/recent report to see whether the person is currently in county custody or within its recent-release window.
- If the event was municipal, use that police department’s records or FOIA route for the incident or arrest report.
- Request a retained booking record or photograph from the correct custodian when the online report has no photo.
- Search McHenry Public Case Access or use a Circuit Clerk terminal for the later case, plea, disposition, or sentence.
- For a state commitment, check IDOC. For separate federal custody, use BOP or ICE rather than the county roster.
Want the full countywide picture? The McHenry booking records page puts every custody and records route in one spot. City pages branch off from there. You'll find them for Crystal Lake, Algonquin, and Woodstock. Those narrower pages come in handy when the arresting agency is the detail that matters.
McHenry Weekly Bulletin Pattern
The Sheriff's Office has long put out weekly arrest bulletins. Each bulletin covers one stated week. It lists subject name, age, resident city, arrest date and time, and the charge or charges. Pages dating through 2023 are still viewable. That gives the bulletins an archive feel. No 2026 schedule is confirmed, and no weekend surge pattern or retention rule has been established.
The format still pays off for older stories. A bulletin shows how an arrest first entered the county's public news stream. The current roster shows who is in custody right now. Keep those two views separate. Blending them into one "recent mugshot" result would mislead you.
Electronic Complaints After McHenry News
One court rule matters here. Administrative Order 2023-14 requires an electronic criminal complaint for criminal defendants held under arrest. That includes anyone transported to the McHenry County Jail. The filing bridges a news report and the courthouse. It ties the arresting agency to a case record even when the Sheriff's report captures nothing beyond a custody snapshot.
The Circuit Clerk's remote-access system carries fields for charge, statute, plea, disposition, bail, warrant, and sentence. Not every scanned document is guaranteed to be public online, though. When a story and a jail entry clash, pull the case number and dates. Compare them against the court record. Then ask the Clerk about public terminals or copies.
News Coverage Is Not a Disposition
A news article captures one moment, not the full case. For the authoritative version, go to the Circuit Clerk's record rather than the weekly bulletin or the press coverage.
The Clerk's case file is the document that settles the question. Everything else in the news stream is a waypoint toward it.
Sharing a link? Keep its source and date attached. A third-party photo can travel far from its original context. For current custody status, confirm with the agency or court that originated the case.
Crystal Lake, Algonquin, and Woodstock News
Local outlets cover all three City Map communities. Depth and timing vary widely, though. Patch blotter items document Crystal Lake and Algonquin activity. Shaw Local, the Scanner, and the County Blog pick up Woodstock and other towns when something big happens. None of them promises complete custody coverage for any city.
For a city-specific arrest search, pair the Crystal Lake, Algonquin, and Woodstock records pages with the official county roster. Patch examples like an Algonquin blotter or a Sheriff/local-police roundup show selected coverage, not a full feed. One wrinkle remains. Algonquin straddles McHenry and Kane Counties, so check both.
